Port Moresby Nature Park Animals

Port Moresby Nature Park is home to over 550 native animals and hundreds of plant species, many of which are rarely seen outside of PNG.

For example:

Crocodiles

For PNG people, the Crocodile is one of the most important animals especially for the Sepik province, this is why the crocodile features regularly in many cultural items such as paintings and carving as it represents strength.

Cassowary (The Southern Cassowary)

Cassowary are large flightless birds most closely related to the Emu. They live in tropical forests of PNG, Indonesia, and northeastern Australia.

They have a distinctive prehistoric look highlighted by a bright blue face, two blood-red wattles on their neck, and a hollow helmet on top of their head.

Many people are scared of Cassowary because they have a reputation for being the world’s largest most dangerous bird, but rest assured that you won’t encounter wild Cassowary on the roads around Port Moresby!

Cuscus  (Common Spotted Cuscus / White Cuscus)

Have you ever seen this cute animal before?!

This animal’s name is Cuscus and it can be found in the Cape York region of Australia, PNG and nearby islands.

They belong to the tree marsupial family, are closely related to possums, and are very slow, shy and nocturnal so it’s quite rare to see them during the day.

They have a very unique appearance, and can be identified by their long prehensile tail which has wooly fur on the top, and scales on the bottom, which help them climb trees! Their fur is very soft and warm, and is often used to make hats! They’re too cute to wear…

Gatherings, birthday parties, and BBQs are very popular pastimes at Port Moresby Nature Park.
